Friday Find

So today I have a great Friday Find.  Though you can't "wear" it, I feel it's not only a great fashion accessory, it serves a purpose as well.

If you know me at all you know I am what I refer to as a "visual learner".  I need to see things sometimes before I fully understand them.  If we are going to have a meeting I really prefer it be in person.  If you want to tell me about a room you are decorating, it's best if I am there in the room to visualize. The only exception to this (big surprise) is fashion.  I can (and do) help people over the phone or email all the time with suggestions of outfits, items to purchase, etc.   I get a lot of pics from the fitting room to get my advice and I love it :)  However, if you want me to remember a date, it's best I write it down.  I really did try to use my phone as a calendar.  Not smart - for me.

So, my Friday Find is my Erin Condren Life Planner.  Over the years I have tried MANY planners. ( I have 4 different empty Franklin Covey binders as proof).  This is my second year using the Erin Condren Planner.

What I love:

  • The vertical layout - 3 blocks for each day of the week for you to divide as you like
  • The size of the planner - perfect for desktop or to carry along with in a bag or big purse
  • There is a monthly calendar for ease of month-at-a-glance type planning
  • Options - PEOPLE - you can choose from tons of different covers - or design your own.  You can switch out the covers as often as you like
  • You may or may not know - there is a huge planner community "out there".  There are shops on Etsy soley devoted to stickers and decorations for your planner
  • Overall, the planner is very user friendly and you can truly make it work for you

Challenges:

  • There are Etsy shops soley devoted to stickers and decorations for your planner
  • The planner doesn't plan for you :)

I am not writing a sponsored Friday Find but if you're interested www.erincondren.com   and life planners are 50% off right now...

Friday Find

Happy Friday!!

My find for this week is a little different.  The find is not so much an object or piece of clothing as it is an event of sorts.

Last night, I was part of a great GNO.  Unfamiliar with the term?  It's Girl's Night Out.  I won't go thru an entire history here, but GNO has been around awhile.  Sometimes held in a home displaying a direct sales product like jewelry or make-up, sometimes held in a shop, sometimes in bar.  No matter the place, what's important to me and why I LOVE being part of these is when done right- a GNO is all about women getting together inspiring each other.  That's the only GNO I want to be a part of.  In my case, my fav is an event involving clothing (of course).  Last night was awesome!  We gathered in a small shop full of great finds of all sorts from clothing to accessories to home items to bath/spa goodies.  Some lucky shoppers had special touches added to their hairstyle while shopping (including an homage to Prince with some purple hair).  We put new outfits together, found new ways to wear something we already owned, found new pieces perhaps we wouldn't normally buy.  But...most important ... we encouraged each other, celebrated each other, and laughed.  THIS is a great Friday Find.  I encourage you to have your own GNO ....girlfriends ...celebrate each other...inspire each other.  The world could use a little more of that.

Casual Days - 2 Ways

I love versatility in my wardrobe.  I love options.  It's another beautiful day here in West Michigan with temps set to hit the high 70's again.  I have many different things I have to accomplish today and I want to be comfortable but I don't want the frump factor to ease in today :)

I chose a linen blend pant with a loose tshirt to start my outfit. I want the option of being more casual for the first part of the day and perhaps a little more "finished" yet still casual for the later part of the day - without changing my entire outfit.  I am going to achieve this by simply changing out the accessories and the footwear.

The outfit on the left is a little more casual and relaxed.  The shoes and the simple necklace give it that ease of comfort yet no frump.  I know I look a little sad in the pic on the left (maybe because I have to go to the grocery) but I really do like this outfit.    On the right, I simply change out the shoes along with a different necklace and bracelet to give me, what I think, is a little more put together for  dinner out with the Mister or perhaps drinks with friends.  Either way, there is enough of a difference in the two looks to give me options...a woman loves options.

Clothing in the pics:

Loft pants and shirt from last year

Left:

Shoes:  Circus by Sam Edelman

Necklace: from a local boutique

Right:

Shoes:  Korks by Kork Ease

Necklace:  Bronzo Italia from QVC

Bracelet:  Betsey Johnson

Friday Find

Finally....here in West Michigan I believe Spring has Sprung!

My Friday Find is this  awesome sandal I recently purchased from Macy's.

This is the  Clarks Somerset Women's Caberet Charm Peep-Toe Flats in the color Tobacco.

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/clarks-somerset-womens-caberet-charm-peep-toe-flats?ID=2458161&CategoryID=50295#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D7%26ruleId%3D65|BS%26slotId%3D6%26kws%3Dclarks%20somerset

What I love:

  • This sandal is so versatile both in color and style.  The combination of the brown and black makes it compatible with so many color combinations.  The peep toe style makes it perfect for now, when the temps are just starting to warm; yet it will still be great in the summer temps as well.
  • The heel height is perfect... not a complete flat but barely has any lift at all
  • The fact that the upper part of the sandal is leather means this is a quality sandal that will give you fashion wear from season to season.  The footbed is made of a dark velvet-like material which not only adds comfort, but will hide that obnoxious "sweaty foot stain" ...or does that just happen to me ????
  • The overall style of the sandal has both classic touches with a bit of edge as well.  I love this tobacco color because it has the black combination of the back strap.  The outside stitching around the front half of the sandal adds a touch I enjoy.
  • The quality.  Clarks are a great go-to brand for me for long lasting quality and wear.

I love this sandal...I have paired it today with skinny jeans and a cute linen-blend top.  That's right, I have even pulled a little linen out... Welcome Spring !!

Friday Find

It's Friday.  I think Friday is a great day to discover new treasures.  Here is a treasure I recently discovered

Who What Wear lace up Dress available at Target or Target.com http://www.target.com/p/women-s-lace-up-shift-dress-who-what-wear/-/A-50379754#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=lace+up+dress+who+what+wear

Who What Wear lace up Dress available at Target or Target.com http://www.target.com/p/women-s-lace-up-shift-dress-who-what-wear/-/A-50379754#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=lace+up+dress+who+what+wear

What a great dress for a great price!  The dress is made of a cotton and polyester blend, which is great when it comes to care for the dress.  As a bonus, with that blend of polyester, wrinkling should be minimal.

What I love:

Versatility - it can be worn now with a cardigan, jean jacket over it.  It obviously can be worn sleeveless anytime.  By pairing this easy dress with different shoes I think you can also achieve a totally different look.  Pair it with wedges and some chunky jewelry and it becomes more dressy.  Add flat sandals and some wood jewelry and you are transformed to a more casual feel.  This also means it would be a great dress to travel with because you can achieve different looks and therefore pack less :)

Price - seriously - under $35 - need I say more?

Cut - the shape of this dress can be flattering on almost any body type - love that!

Where to buy?  - I love TARGET !  Even though this dress is available to everyone, if you add your own style, you won't "see yourself coming and going".

This is a great find for Friday, I think you should check it out!

outfits in real life

Though it's April 4th I am watching snowflakes fall outside my window.  I am still thinking of Spring and clothes ...imagine that.

Now is a great time to change out your closet.  If you have the space,  the best thing to do is totally remove any fall/winter items from your closet and replace with all your spring (and summer if you are up for that challenge) clothing.  I love looking at magazines, online websites, and other sources for inspiration in dressing for the new season.  I am sure many of you do the same.  The only drawback for me, at least, I can't afford to dress like all the pictures.  Nor, does my real life allow me to.  As beautiful as the clothes are, many are not practical or affordable or both.  But, they do inspire me to create my own best looks.   Some of my best days of inspiration come when I do a Closet Restyle for a client or a Shop Your closet  with a client.  I love meeting a client in her home and going thru her closet together and creating new outfits.  I love being part of the process of helping her discover (or re-discover) her own style.  It's amazing what another pair of eyes can see that you may not have seen before!

Take a look at a couple of pics

In the snapshot above - there are soooo many different options we discovered for my client.  She can pair either sleeveless top with any of the pant options.  On cooler days wear the denim shirt as a "jacket" loose or tied at the waist.  She can wear the denim shirt with any of the bottoms as another choice and totally different look.  She was able to gain many new options just from this one capsule...love it!!!  A girl needs options.

In this great Spring capsule for another client, we have paired again pants and a skirt with different tops and the jacket.  There are more than 8 options here just by changing the combinations around.  Tons of versatility in this capsule for work, dinner, a casual afternoon lunch, and much more.  Imagine the adorable skirt with the white shirt and casual flats...then ....switch the shoe for a classy heel and you've change the whole look.  Again...options!!

What I love most about both of these is they are from the closets of real-life awesome women who have discovered their own style.  Not fresh off the runway but fresh from their closet and the life they are living.  These photos are from their own lookbooks that I created for them to reference for what to wear to get the most from what they own...and most important to me...to feel their best.

I would love to do the same for you - contact me for more details !!

Some Spring Wishes

Okay, so here in West Michigan we are under some sort of weather advisory.  There is snow to the north of us and some sort of "mix" here.  Oh, did I mention this is from today, March 23?????  Since the weather is so miserable I thought I would post my most recent wishlist for Spring.

With the recent horrific news around the world, the current political season, and the weather all combined I went to my "happy place" for some spring inspiration.  Each year at this time for as long as I can remember until I was 14 years old, the time right before  Easter meant shopping for a new outfit.  Listen, when I say outfit - I mean out-fit.  New hat, dress, purse, and shoes. ( If you know me at all, you know I looked forward to the purse most, but I digress).  I thought in the same vein as that event I looked so forward to...I would share a little of my dreams for this Spring Season.  I am often asked my opinions or thoughts of what the current trends are.  I hesitate to answer in too much detail because I feel so strongly about women owning their own style.  I like to think of trends more for inspiration.  I think you will see what I mean when you take a peek at my wishlist below.

It's funny, now that I look a little closer at my choices because most of the clothing choices could be seen to all come from one main trend/idea.  I think the boho chic feeling that is happening right now is reflected in so many of my favs.  I love love love the bell sleeve.  I would love it on a blouse or a dress either one.  The spring dresses with all the floral prints are so gorgeous to me.  You can find them in so many different shapes and sizes there has got to be one that is perfect for you too!  There are floral prints in maxi dresses, midi dresses, sheath dresses, shirt dresses, short dresses, skirts, and more.  You merely need choose the silhouette that suits you best.  The embroidery trend is also out there.  Two of my favs for me, are the poppy blazer and jeans I show on my wishlist.  Obviously, it goes without saying, I would not wear the 2 together but as separates they are awesome.  I think versatility is key when you are spending more money for a piece and I think both the jeans and the blazer can not only be worn a ton of different ways, but they will also carry thru the summer and in to early fall so ...bonus!!

Shoes and Purses - (they need their own paragraph)  Mules - I love mules and I am so happy to see them making a a much wanted resurgence.  The Rose slip-ons?  Everyone needs a fun pair of shoes, no?  The sandals - In keeping with the current ankle interest I love these sandals for that feature but even more for the color combination of the sandal itself.  I am also a huge fan of comfort and quality and these sandals have both of those.  The handbags -- again, if you know me at all, I could do an entire series on handbags.  I have to say each year during that Easter shopping I spoke of earlier, the purse of choice was either straw or patent leather.  I already have both so I am looking for something new.  I love the slightly oversize/satchel/handbag feel to these 2 favs I have chosen.  (I also love any handbag with either a turnkey or kiss closure like the one shown on the front of the Coach bag).

I won't buy everything on this page (sad face here) but it does give me inspiration for what I will buy and for what I will  find by shopping my own closet. Also,  I will continue changing the seasons in my closet.  Part of this will be packing away winter in 2 different containers.  One for next year to keep and one for what I already know I want to consign (can't consign fall/winter until fall/winter).  But, again I digress.

I hope I have given you some inspiration to start your own wishlist...as well as to begin to change over your closet.  It's Spring!!

Just a quick psa....

Okay so tomorrow here in West Michigan it's going to be 50 degrees!!  I know how excited everyone is...some perhaps too excited.  I know there will be those clothing themselves in shorts, capris, tshirts, and flip flops.  This is a short Public Service Announcement to say...it's not time yet people, be patient.

Here's a little snippet of how to dress for now (February) and later (when Spring finally arrives).  Just an idea :)

To Consign ...

As I look out the window at snow still on the ground I am dreaming of warmer weather and a clean and organized closet :).  Spring will be here before you know it!  It's time to start thinking about your spring wardrobe.  Now is a great time to go thru your spring wardrobe and evaluate what needs to go and what should stay.  Whether you did an awesome job of purging last year (prior to putting Spring away) or  you have a huge pile of things to take away - consignment is a great option to say good bye to a big stack or just a few pieces.  I don't really think it's recycling exactly but it is a great way to let someone else have a chance at your best pieces and earn a little ca$h at the same time.

I have talked about consigning before but I thought to actually hear some tips from a shopowner would be great.  When I talk to clients about consigning  the two concerns that come up most often are:  they don't think they get enough money back or wonder how pricing is done and they wonder why their pieces were "rejected".   Whether you are an old pro at consignment or a novice, I thought a refresher of sorts might help.  I reached out to one of my favorite local shops - The Conscious Collective Consignment - and asked Katrin Ophoff, the co-owner if she would answer some key questions in regards to consigning your treasures.  The extra-cool thing about The Conscious Collective Consignment is they also take your special home good pieces. The shop is located at 445 Bridge St NW, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.    They have a great way to connect via their facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/TheConsciousCollectiveConsignment/

Question and Answer with Katrin Ophoff Co-Owner of The Conscious Collective Consignment

1.  What items should I bring? Every consignment store is a little different, for us we ask for items to be OFF of hangers and folded in bags or baskets, we don't worry about wrinkles because we steam each and every item before it goes out on the sales floor. Bring us your "like new" clothing, shoes, accessories and home decor, we like eclectic but we also follow current trends and styles. Bring us the best of the best of your items, if you think it might be too worn, it probably is.

2. What should I not bring? You should not bring items that are damaged in anyway, fading, pilling, moth holes, shrunken items. Keep in mind that we are a consignment boutique not a thrift store, there is a big difference! Thrift store items are often faded, stretched out, may have damage, have obvious signs of wear. A consignment boutique like ours, is designed for high quality merchandise, and that's what you should be bringing in...If it looks like it should go to a thrift store, don't bring it to a boutique. Basic rule of thumb, if you think it's junk we don't want it.

3. What is the seasonal “timing” you use as far as clothing goes? For us, this varies a bit depending on our ever changing Michigan weather. This year, we will start accepting Spring items at the beginning of February...the weather will dictate exactly when we start accepting summer items, like shorts, but usually we begin accepting Summer items around April. Fall items we begin to take at the end of July/beginning of August. And heavy winter items (like winter coats and winter snow boots) we begin accepting in October.

4.  What are the most common reasons you may “pass” on piece of clothing I bring in to consign? Too much noticeable wear or damage (even moth holes are enough for us to pass on an item), excessive pet hair, smell like cigarettes or other odors, outdated styles (example - pleated front pants for men, women's business suits, etc), often we pass on items just because we have found that certain things don't sell for us (examples: 3"-4" stiletto heels, women's plain button down "business" tops, certain brands of men's button down dress shirts like Van Huesen and Stafford).

5. If I choose to have you keep any clothing that doesn’t sell what happens to those pieces? We donate any unwanted clothing to the residents of Well House, a local non-profit providing permanent housing for the homeless, we also donate items to Mel Trotter, specifically damaged items because they have a program that recycles damaged fabrics.

6. How did you choose the charity? We chose Well House because we love what that organization is doing to help homeless individuals improve the quality of their lives. After talking with a few of the Well House board members, we saw that there was indeed a need for the residents to receive clothing. We now have a list of resident's clothing and shoe sizes so we can ensure that we are sending them items that can be used. The remaining donation items that Well House can't use, we have then give to Mel Trotter, who can use the donations as inventory in their retail stores which helps support their goals of helping the homeless as well, the selling point with Mel Trotter was their clothing recycling program, it gives us great peace of mind to know that damaged clothing items aren't just ending up in a landfill.

7. How do you determine the price of an item? All of our prices are based on the original retail value, we often do research before pricing an item to determine original retail value as well as resale value, which can sometimes differ greatly. We also want to make sure that we are pricing items in a way that makes even expensive brands an option for every customer. For example, a J Crew sweater that was originally priced at $225 could easily be priced at and sell for $50 or more, but we think that still seems a little too high of a price, so we would price that sweater at around $35, which we feel still honors the original value of this item, but at $35 it is more likely to sell quickly because more people can justify spending $35 than $50 for a sweater.

8. What items would you love to see more of in your store? We have great success with Home Decor items, but it sells so fast that we often have a low selection, I would love to see more people bringing in home decor items. That, and Plus-Size clothing! We are still trying to get the word out that we accept and carrying very stylish and on trend plus-size women's clothing up to a 3x (26/28).

9. I love the fact you carry not only women’s clothing and men’s clothing (which is awesome) but you also have lovelies for the home.  What should we know in regards to consigning home goods?  (what you take, what you don’t take, etc.) We love having the Home Decor items! We do not accept electronics or cookware, though we do accept Vintage Pyrex and Pampered Chef stoneware bake-ware, and other vintage dishware and glassware. We look for items that have an earthy feel to them, items made of natural materials - wood, stone, etc. We also love vintage and antique items. Eclectic is a good word for our Home Decor.

I love the idea of starting fresh for a new season by shopping your own wardrobe, passing on the pieces that no longer work for you, AND gain some spending money for new stuff all at the same time.  If you are ready, but don't want to do it alone, contact me I am happy to help!!

Wear now and later...

I don't know about you but it's almost the end of January and I am sick of winter here in West Michigan ...well, more specifically, sick of  my winter closet.  Which is unusual for me because winter is one of my favorite seasons to dress for.  I am digging in my closet to "reinvent" some favorites as well as add a pop of spring to my winter outfits.  One thing I love  is the idea of "wearing now and later".  You're probably thinking "Of course, wear now and later, we all wear our clothes more than once."  But what I mean is ...look towards the next season, so Spring, choose something from your spring closet and make it work for now, the dead middle of winter.  It's pretty simple to accomplish a "Wear Now and Later" outfit and it will give you a spark to get through the rest of winter, regardless of where you are.  (I know I am not only the one who feels this way, come on!)

Here is a great example:  pair a dress you would wear in the spring with flats, the same dress you might wear with no tights and low booties or boots, but instead wear the dress with leggings, jeggings, or skinny jeans.  You may need to layer with a long cardigan but regardless, you have a "new" outfit and a renewed sense of warmer days ahead :)

I hope this inspires you to look in your closet, pull a spring dress, wear it now and perhaps have a new bounce in your step as you think of warmer days ahead.

New Year New You??? ....NO!

It's that time of year ...you know when all the "stuff" starts.  How to be a better you, how to be a more fit you, how to be a skinny you, how to be a more healthy you, how  to be more like her-you, how not be you, how to be a richer you, blah blah blah.  This isn't about all that stuff, this is "anti all the stuff" stuff.  January always kicks off the rush to be different.  I feel like now more than ever, it's time to talk about this.  I don't have cool outfit pics or thoughtful quotes from famous hip people, I just want us to all come together on a few thoughts I have.  So here is my "bit"  Don't worry I will be brief :)

I think it's time.  Regardless of how old you are, your marital status, how many kids you have or don't have, where you work, what your dreams are, let's come together.  Let's decide as a group of smart women that it's time to STOP.  Stop what?  Stop trying to be a different YOU!  I know this is easier said than done.  But let's try and see where we go.  Instead of being upset you went up a size last year or you didn't get the diet results or whatever, buy a new pair of pants or jeans that fit where you are NOW.  Buy a pair you feel pretty in, that fit!  Buy a pair that you will love you in.  Don't concern yourself with the number on the tag - concern yourself with how you feel in them.  Be yourself - don't try to be someone else.  Start by shopping in the right store in the right department.  If you are out of high school you should not be shopping for an odd size number (3, 5, 7, 9, 11) those are junior sizes - you are not.  If you are under 5'4" in height start in the petite department.  You may not finish there, but start there.  If you think you are a size 10, take an 8, 10, and 12 in the fitting room and start by trying on the 12.  You have to know, this will take you a bit of time.  Plan accordingly.  I truly suggest you go by yourself.  Enjoy a coffee or espresso then head in.  Go to more than one store, or department in a department store.  Don't stop until you find a pair you feel pretty in.  Now, walk out of the store, hold you head high, and celebrate you.  Then...

Pass it on.  Help a friend by encouraging them to do the same thing.  Set a goal in your friend circle to all do the same thing.  Post a pic on social media, let's try a new hashtag #newyearsamemeandlovingit

Next...let's really try as women this year to simply celebrate each other.  Quit picking, comparing, criticizing each other.  Instead let's ban together and decide it's time to stop.  Maybe, just maybe, if we start in small numbers it will begin to take hold.  Even if it doesn't, in your circle of influence it will.
